Friends of Worle Creek

an informal group of neighbors and others devoted to the protection and preservation
of Worle Creek and its surrounds
in southwestern Ames, Iowa

In 2003 a City of Ames budget item for the next year proposed a $1 million sewer trunk line to follow the Worle Creek between South Dakota and State Avenues. The proposal was part of an effort to be more proactive in forcing development of the named Southwest Growth Area "B", roughly the land to the southwest of Ames to the Boone county line and south of Highway 30, in the Land Use Policy Plan. The engineering intention is to follow the natural gravity flow of the creek watershed. The sewer is intended to serve future development of the lands in that area, and to service current residents after they have been involuntarily annexed.

We, the friends of Worle Creek, believed that many assumptions underlying this plan were faulty, misguided, or very unlikely to happen within the next decade or two. There were several questions regarding that proposal that we believed should be answered objectively and conveyed to the Citizens of Ames. That was the impetus for a set of neighborhood meetings and this informal group.

This web site highlights the issues, study, and good outcomes.
